Village of Berrien Springs Wins First Place Award for Mechanic Street Improvements

The Village of Berrien Springs is proud to announce that the Mechanic Street Improvements Project has received First Place in the Transportation category ($500,000–$1,000,000) from the American Public Works Association (APWA) Southwest Branch, recognizing excellence in public infrastructure, transportation

planning, and project delivery.

The Mechanic Street Improvements Project was designed to enhance roadway safety, functionality, and accessibility while supporting long-term infrastructure needs in the Village’s downtown area. Key elements included roadway reconstruction, upgraded pavement and drainage, improved pedestrian accommodations, and design features to

optimize traffic flow and connectivity for motorists, pedestrians, and nearby businesses. The project was carefully planned to extend the service life of the roadway while minimizing future maintenance needs, all within the $500,000–$1,000,000 budget range.

This award highlights the Village’s commitment to investing in infrastructure that balances safety, efficiency, and community impact through thoughtful planning and collaboration.

The Village extends special thanks to Wightman for their engineering expertise and partnership throughout the project, as well as to Melanie and her team for their leadership and coordination that guided the project from concept through completion.

“This project is a great example of what can be achieved when strong planning meets practical execution,” said Dave Kunde, Public Works Superintendent for the Village of Berrien Springs. “The improvements to Mechanic Street enhance safety and usability for the public while providing a durable, long-term solution that supports our operations

and maintenance goals.”

Village Council Member Mark VandeVere, who assisted with communication efforts throughout the project, emphasized the importance of transparency and teamwork.

“Clear communication and collaboration were key components of this project,” said VandeVere. “From residents to engineers to Village staff, everyone played a role in ensuring the community understood the purpose of the improvements and the benefits they would deliver. This recognition from APWA reflects that shared commitment.”

The Village of Berrien Springs is honored to be recognized by the APWA Southwest Branch and remains dedicated to investing in transportation projects that strengthen the community, support economic development, and improve quality of life.
