Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra

Presents “A String Quartet Pop Up! Concert”

St. Joseph, Mich. – Experience a live music piece known for captivating and inspiring listeners and performing musicians alike. A quartet of musicians from the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra will perform as part of the SMSO’s 2024 Pop Up! Concert Series.

Performing on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, will be Mark Portolese (violin), Jessie Bennett (violin), Sara Churchill (viola), David Machivariani (cello) and Brook Bennett (cello). Featured will be Franz Schubert’s Cello Quintet in C Major d. 956 with four movements.

Written in 1828 just before the composer's death, this piece is regarded by many as one of the finest chamber works of all time, starting with a slow, peaceful and contemplative movement, then moves into more turbulence and follows with sizzling energy.

This free concert is open to the public.

This concert is made possible, in part, by the “For Good” grant from the Berrien Community Foundation, the Michigan Arts and Culture Council, and The National Endowment for the Arts.

These concerts were started during the pandemic as a thank you to the community for its support of the SMSO. Free to the public, donations are greatly appreciated and go toward the Symphony’s program offerings.

Originally established in 1951 as the “Twin City Symphonic Society,” the SMSO has been an integral part of the cultural fabric of our community since 1951. As the oldest professional arts organization in the area pursuing our mission of Transforming All Lives Through Music with a vision to have a positive impact within our community, we embrace our responsibility to be a dynamic and vibrant part of southwest Michigan by offering innovative programming and increased educational opportunities in a broader variety of performance locations.
