The Southwest Michigan Regional Airport Authority Board has announced the appointment of Christopher Beckman as the new Airport Director, following a unanimous vote during the board’s Aug. 21st meeting. The decision came after a thorough search and recommendation from the Airport’s hiring committee.
Beckman brings over a decade of military and civilian aviation management experience to the position, having served in the U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard. His background includes overseeing large-scale runway renovation projects, supervising airfield construction, managing budgets, and coordinating with pilots, air traffic controllers, and contractors.
“We think this young man, Christopher Beckman, would be a marvelous selection as director,” said Patricia Preston, who introduced the motion to hire Beckman. Alex Little supported the motion, which passed unanimously.
Outgoing Director Shannon Christy, who also served on the search committee, praised Beckman’s communication skills and leadership potential. “It has to be somebody that can write coherently on a regular basis so that when you’re interacting with different people, they can have a consistent voice for the airport,” Christy said. “We really liked his case studies, and he was able to defend them.”
Originally from Jackson, Michigan, Beckman began his aviation career after joining the Air Force following
a year at Jackson College. “I’ve worked on both military and civilian airfields, so I have a good mixture of
both,” Beckman said. “I want to use those skill sets to help grow and develop this airport here in Benton Harbor, and hopefully myself and the airport can grow together.”
During the Airport’s most recent board meeting on September 9, 2025, Beckman attended and had the opportunity to meet and address community members for the first time in his new role. He expressed enthusiasm for the future of the airport and a strong desire to listen, learn, and lead with collaboration.
“I’m excited to be here and grateful for the opportunity to serve this community,” Beckman said. “I may not be familiar with every challenge the airport has faced in the past, but I’m here to work with our team, our pilots, and our residents to build a stronger future together. My focus is on transparency, safety, and creating an airport that truly reflects the pride of Southwest Michigan.”
With the appointment of the new director, the Southwest Michigan Regional Airport is seeking to engage the community more in how they can involve residents, businesses, and organizations in its mission. They welcome input, ideas, and collaboration opportunities. To share your thoughts or get involved, reach out by emailing media@swmiairport.com.
