Lake Michigan College Employees Spread Holiday Cheer Through Annual Food Basket Event
BENTON HARBOR, MICH. – Lake Michigan College (LMC) employees continued a beloved tradition on December 17 by delivering holiday food baskets to individuals and families in need. This year marked the 41st anniversary of the annual Holiday Food Basket (HFB) event, with 50 baskets packed and delivered thanks to the collective effort of approximately 30 employees and their family members.
The recipients included 40 individuals and families referred by the Area Agency on Aging, five families served by the Readiness Center, and five Lake Michigan College students experiencing food insecurity. Each basket contained carefully selected food items, providing recipients with nourishment and comfort during the holiday season. Families with pets also received treats for their furry friends, ensuring everyone in the household felt the holiday spirit.
“This event exemplifies the spirit of giving at LMC,” said LMC President Dr. Trevor Kubatzke. “It’s a meaningful way for our college community to come together and support others during this special time of year.”
The Holiday Food Basket Committee, consisting of Jenny Clark, Erin McGuire, Sabrina Hinrichs, Rita Whise, Carrie Beukelman, Kathy Burnett, Meghan Pelkey, and Jodie Littlefield, played a critical role in organizing this initiative. Their tireless planning and dedication ensured its continued success.
The baskets themselves were generously donated by the HES Facilities Management company, while the food was purchased through contributions from LMC employees and funds raised by the HFB Committee.
“The Holiday Food Basket event is a labor of love that wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of our employees and the hard work of our committee members,” said Jodie Littlefield, HFB Committee Chair. “We’re proud to carry on this tradition and make a positive impact in our community.”
As LMC celebrates over four decades of this cherished tradition, the college reaffirms its commitment to supporting local residents and fostering a culture of care and generosity.
The HFB committee raises funds all year for the program. If you would like to make a donation toward next year’s holiday food baskets, go to lakemichigancollege.edu/
