KOHN PARK RIBBON CUTTING CELEBRATION SET FOR SEPTEMBER 17

Community Invited to Celebrate the Opening of Sawyer’s Newest Public Space

Chikaming Township, MI – After months of construction and years of planning, Kohn Park is ready to welcome the community.

Chikaming Township invites residents, visitors, project supporters, and community partners to a ribbon cutting celebration on Thursday, September 17 at 10:00 a.m. at Kohn Park, 5844 Sawyer Road in Sawyer.

The celebration will feature remarks from township and community leaders, live music by St. Joe Jack, complimentary refreshments, and the official ribbon cutting.

“This park is a wonderful example of what can happen when a community comes together around a shared vision,” said David Bunte, Chikaming Township Supervisor. “From Jerry and Beverly Kohn’s generous gift of the land to the many donors, funding partners, and community members who helped bring that vision to life, Kohn Park truly belongs to this community. We’re excited to finally welcome everyone in and celebrate together.”

The celebration will also recognize Beverly Kohn and the Kohn family, whose generosity helped make the park possible. Beverly and her late husband, Jerry, donated the land for the park to Chikaming Township. Following Jerry’s passing, Beverly and their children continued that legacy by making significant financial contributions to the community crowdfunding campaign that helped bring the park to life.

Kohn Park transforms the site of Sawyer’s former fire station into a welcoming public gathering space in the heart of the community. The park features interactive musical play elements, custom seating, picnic areas, accessible pathways, native landscaping, and other amenities designed to create a place for people of all ages to gather, play, and connect.

While the park will be open for the community to enjoy, a few finishing touches are still to come. The park’s signature shade structure and decorative lighting will be installed as those final custom elements become available.

The project was made possible through a combination of community donations, Township investment, and support from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s Public Spaces Community Places program, Land and Water Conservation Fund, Michigan Arts and Culture Council, and Berrien Community Foundation.
