“When Nancy announced her decision to semi-retire, Tyanna expressed her desire to be considered for the role of Executive Director. She was tasked with developing a business plan for the organization followed by a thorough interview process by the search committee. Our Board and Search Committee are excited to welcome Tyanna Essig as she leads Berrien County Cancer Service into its next chapter,” said Josh Simons, Board Chair. “Her proven vision, deep commitment and extensive experience in non-profit leadership embody the qualities we sought in a new leader.”
Tyanna Essig brings 20 years of experience in the nonprofit sector. She has been instrumental in fund development for the Berrien County Cancer Service since July 2021, where she successfully increased the fundraising efforts of the organization by 67%. She has also assumed significant office management responsibilities during her tenure.

Nancy Church, RN added, “Serving for 13 years and Executive director and 18 years as a nurse at BCCS has been the greatest privilege of my career. I’m deeply grateful to our team, donors, partners, and the amazing individuals and families we support. I’m fully committed to a thoughtful, thorough transition and confident that Tyanna will elevate our organization to new heights.”
Highlights of Leadership Transition
- Outgoing Executive Director:
- Nancy Church successfully secured grants over $1.5 million for the organization.
- Met the growing need for proper nutrition for cancer patients of the Berrien County Cancer Service by 58%
- She prioritized the enhancement of our resource locker, which provides essential items for local cancer patients, increasing the use value of these resources by 54%
- Throughout her tenure, Nancy has personally served over 800 patients.
- BCCS History:
- Established in 1948 in Niles as an in-home skilled nursing resource
- Olove Colcord, the founding nurse transformed the organization from an American Cancer Society initiative to a successful 501 (c)(3) organization serving tens of thousands of cancer patients over the past 77 years. She dedicated over 40 years to organization.
- BCCS began in Niles, Michigan, expanded to include an additional office in St. Joseph, and operated from a building on Red Arrow Highway for over 40 years. The organization currently resides in the Marie Yeager Cancer Center at the Corewell Health Park on Hollywood Road, Entrance D, 2nd floor.
