The Box Factory for the Arts is set to premier Starry Night, the first dramatic production to portray new revelations about the life of Vincent van Gogh, over Memorial Day weekend.
Art historians, including a Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer, now say Vincent didn't cut off his ear or kill himself, but took the blame to save others. "The hope is to dispel long-held myths, to clear Vincent's reputation," said playwright Joe Moody, who spent years researching the prolific artist's life.
Local actor Jareth Zelmer stars as Vincent van Gogh in what the script describes as a "modern dream," fusing 19th century aesthetic with current times.
Playing fellow artist Paul Gauguin is Brian Lorenc of Berrien Center. Margaret Thompson of Three Oaks (now of Chicago) portrays Kate. From Saint Joseph are Meggie Anderson as Charissa, Mack Moody as the teenaged Bane, and Mark Schreiber as Joseph Roulin. Kendall Smith of Three Oaks portrays Johanna, Vincent's sister-in-law.
Local artists, including those from the Box Factory, are creating renditions of Vincent's work for the play. A one-of-a-kind auction is planned at the Box June 4 at 9:30 pm following the final performance. Included in the auction will be some of the locally recreated paintings, including an original rendition of Starry Night featured in the play.
