CASA serves the region's most vulnerable children: those removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect, or other adversities that make the foster care experience especially challenging. These children, all under Court jurisdiction, often face complex situations such as having parented their siblings, experienced multiple entries and exits from foster care, lived in several foster homes, been separated from siblings, and invariably suffered severe emotional, educational, or physical disabilities resulting from their trauma.
CASA recruits, selects, and extensively trains volunteer advocates who are trauma-informed and willing to devote time and attention to these children. These volunteers learn the children's stories and specific needs, advocating for them throughout their time in the court system. Our program has grown to be one of the top three largest CASA programs in the state. Last year, we oversaw 50 trained volunteers who served 158 children in need of advocacy in the foster care system.
The impact of CASA extends beyond the children directly served. In addition to supporting the children and their families, our work benefits our volunteers, the family court system, and the community at large. Studies show that children with a CASA volunteer are more likely to feel supported and demonstrate resilience. These factors correlate with better long-term outcomes, including improved health, education, employment prospects, and overall well-being. Through our dedicated efforts, CASA of Southwest Michigan continues to make a significant difference in the lives of vulnerable children and the broader community.
