Here's your chance to turn recycled materials into an experimental print at a collagraph workshop to be led by Kelly Vander Kley. The one-day workshop on May 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. will be held. in the Print Shop at the Box Factory for the Arts, 1101 Broad Street, St. Joseph, MI. Access is through the lower East entrance to the building.
The workshop fee is $75 for members and $90 for non-members of the Berrien Artist Guild. Registration is available online at https:// boxfactoryforthearts.org/ classes-workshops or by credit card by calling the Box Factory at 269-983-3688 during normal gallery hours. The workshop will be limited to a minimum of four participants with a maximum of nine.
A collagraph is a print made from recycled materials that leave texture when imprinted. Items such as cardboard, string, leaves, sandpaper, seeds, fabric and plant materials will be glued to matte board which has been varnished. It then becomes the printing plate. Participants are encouraged to bring their own recyclables to explore a particular subject which might include nature, birds, fish, plants or architecture. All other materials will be supplied.
"Once created the collagraph plate is inked using intaglio or relief printing techniques and printed using damp paper with the etching press," said Vander Kley. "The different materials absorb and release ink in different ways to make exciting and often surprising prints."
