November 25, 2019
There are two upcoming opportunities to enjoy the music of the talented Lake Michigan Youth Orchestra (LMYO). The LMYO is one of several educational programs offered through the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra that provides an orchestral experience to gifted elementary-to-college-aged musicians.

The “Run-Out Concert”, conducted by Mr. Burke Lokey (photo attached), will take place on Friday, December 13th at 7:00 pm at South Haven High School (600 Elkenburg St, South Haven, MI). Tickets are available at the door; $8 for adults, and $5 for students and seniors.

The “Winter Concert” takes place Sunday, December 15th at 4pm at the Howard Performing Arts Center (Andrew’s University - 4160 E Campus Cir Dr, Berrien Springs, MI). Tickets are available at the door; $8 for adults, and $5 for students and seniors. In addition to several pieces performed by the ensembles, the Encore Strings and LMYO Winds will combine forces to perform the lively “Can Can” by Jacque Offenbach and a rousing rendition of “Finlandia” by Jean Sibelius. Encore Strings are conducted by Ms. Rachel Cabanilla-Sinnett (photo attached), and LMYO Winds are conducted by Mr. Mark Hollandsworth (photo attached). Additionally, the Youth Symphony, conducted by Mr. Burke Lokey,  will perform the ever-popular “Barber of Seville Overture” from Gioachino Rossini/ Arr. Merle J. Isaac; Ralph Vaughan Williams “Tuba Concerto, mvt.1” featuring concerto competition winner Logan Payne (photo attached); and the dramatic “Symphony No. 8 (Unfinished) mvt. 1” by Franz Schubert.

Both the “Run-Out Concert” and the “Winter Concert” are completely unique, and music lovers are encouraged to attend both programs so they can experience the full artistic offerings from these ambitious and talented musicians.

For more than 40-years, the Lake Michigan Youth Orchestra has been the capstone educational outreach program of the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra. In addition to receiving an orchestral experience, LMYO members have the opportunity to participate in sectional and one-on-one rehearsals with members of the SMSO.
The LMYO performs four public concerts each year - the Run-Out Concert; a Winter Concert, a Spring Concert and the Side by Side Concert with the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra. The LMYO program includes scholarships to summer music camps, sectional rehearsals with members of the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra and free tickets to SMSO concerts. The Youth Symphony, Encore Strings, LMYO Winds and Concert Strings rehearse Monday evenings throughout the school year. Membership is by audition for all groups.
