Ryan Smith and Afiya Latham, owners of Express Employment Professionals of Southwest Michigan, are offering a class for prospective and established business owners alike. The class will assist business owners in identifying the core values and mission of their business and to understand the potential benefits the organization can receive. Leaders who establish strong values and a clear mission statement can build a positive and productive culture from the top down.
Smith and Latham complete each day working entirely separate roles but come together to create a positive working environment. Smith, a professional recruiter, understands the value in finding talent that suits a position well. Latham, a native of Southwest Michigan, believes that keeping a service-minded mentality motivates her to help others find success in today’s workforce. They both strive to highlight the significance of values and want to provide information regarding how to build a memorable culture.
“Originally, when Ryan and I took over the business, we wanted everyone on the same page,” said Latham. “We had a conversation with staff to agree on what we, the owners and staff, felt was important moving forward. They threw a party with the previous owner and as a result the following core values were implemented: Character, Respect, Teamwork, Healthy Communication, Professionalism, and Attitude.” Express Employment does not have a handbook, because everything ties back to the values.
The class will be held on Thursday, March 19, 2020 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Cornerstone Alliance, 80 W. Main Street, Benton Harbor, MI 49022. There is a $10.00 registration fee. To register, please visit or contact Dubelsa Mata-Garcia at (269) 757-0225.
